Mumbai, May 1: The self-enumeration process for the 2027 census commenced in Maharashtra on Friday, coinciding with the state’s foundation day. Central Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Ramdas Athawale, emphasized that the caste census will assist the government in providing support to each caste.
The self-enumeration will run from May 1 to May 15, 2026, followed by a door-to-door census from June 16 to June 14, 2026. During this period, census workers will conduct surveys in households.
Caste-related information will be included in the second phase of the population census. Speaking to reporters, Athawale mentioned that officials from the census department attended a meeting today. He urged all citizens to cooperate in this census process, which will help ascertain the population of Maharashtra and the entire country.
He highlighted that the most significant aspect of this census is the central government’s decision to include caste as a criterion. Previously, only Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes were counted. This time, the census will account for every religion and caste.
Describing the benefits of the caste census, he stated that it will reveal the percentage of each caste, the number of people employed, the number of farmers or the impoverished, and how many lack housing. This information will enable the government to assist each caste effectively.
The minister appealed to citizens to cooperate when census officials visit their homes and to utilize the census portal.
Currently, house listing (HLO) is underway in various states, followed by the population enumeration (PE). Athawale noted that the launch of the census on Maharashtra Day is particularly significant.
