Beirut, May 18: Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun recently engaged with local agricultural union leaders, emphasizing the need for direct negotiations with Israel. The primary goal of these discussions is to find a resolution to the ongoing Israeli military operations in Lebanon.
According to the presidential office, Aoun outlined a framework for the talks that includes the withdrawal of Israeli forces, a ceasefire, the deployment of the Lebanese army along the borders, the return of displaced individuals, and economic and financial assistance for Lebanon. He clarified that any reports discussing other issues are inaccurate.
Aoun stated, “It is my duty, given my position and responsibilities, to make every possible effort to halt the war against Lebanon and its people, no matter how difficult the steps may be.”
He added, “We have experienced wars before and have seen the dire consequences they brought upon Lebanon. Is there anyone who can bear the cost of that later?”
On the same day, Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported that seven people had been killed in Israeli attacks. As of May 16, the ministry confirmed that the death toll from these assaults had reached 2,900.
Last week, the third round of direct talks between U.S. and Lebanese ambassadors concluded in Washington, resulting in a 45-day extension of the fragile ceasefire in Lebanon.
Despite this, attacks have continued. The Israeli army announced on Monday that it targeted over 30 Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, including a weapons depot, observation posts, and buildings used for planning attacks against Israeli forces.
According to military sources, several Hezbollah fighters were also killed in these strikes.
