Kunal Ganjawala: A Versatile Singer Proficient in Multiple Languages

New Delhi, April 13: Kunal Ganjawala is a renowned Indian playback singer. Born on April 14, 1972, in Pune, Maharashtra, he primarily sings for Bollywood films. However, he has also lent his voice to songs in various languages, including Kannada, Bengali, and Marathi.

Ganjawala rose to fame with the hit song “Bheegi Honth Tere” from the film ‘Murder’ (2004), which made him extremely popular for his melodious and romantic singing style. Over the years, he has sung many popular tracks, including “Salame” from ‘Dhoom’ and “Dil Keh Raha Hai,” and is particularly remembered as an emotive singer from the early 2000s.

He has contributed his voice to numerous Kannada songs and has also sung in Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, Punjabi, Malayalam, Odia, and Assamese. While Ganjawala has won the hearts of many with his songs, his surname has also sparked discussions.

He once shared an intriguing story behind his surname. Kunal explained that it is linked to the British era when his family cultivated cannabis for medicinal purposes. This was once a profession, but it was later deemed illegal, leading to the association of his name with “Ganjawala.”

Kunal mentioned that this practice continued until the Quit India Movement, when Mahatma Gandhi urged Indians to become self-reliant. After that, his family shifted to other occupations, ceasing cannabis cultivation.

Due to his surname, Kunal has often been the subject of jokes, with people asking him about “ganja.” He clarified that he does not smoke at all.

He believes that singing in regional languages touches people’s hearts. Kunal stated that while Hindi allows access to homes, singing in regional languages connects with people’s hearts. He emphasized that no matter where a person resides, singing in their local language fosters a sense of belonging.

In 2005, Kunal married singer Gayatri Ayyar-Ganjawala, a well-known playback artist and performer.

Kunal Ganjawala has received numerous prestigious awards for his work, including the Filmfare Award for Best Male Playback Singer and the R.D. Burman Award for New Music Talent. He has also won the IIFA Award for Best Male Playback Singing and the Zee Cine Award for Best Male Playback Singer. In 2006, he was honored as Best Male Playback Singer at the Star Guild Awards and received the Best Male Playback Singer award at the Bollywood Movie Awards.
