
Pathanamthitta, May 10: A court in Pathanamthitta, Kerala, has handed down a strict sentence to a man convicted of stealing solar batteries. The accused has been sentenced to two years in prison and fined ₹25,000.
The individual, identified as 36-year-old George Mathew, also known as ‘Ashish’ in his locality, resides in Chethakkal Koothattukulam, Kavum Mukkom. The ruling was delivered in the court of Arun Kumar RC, the Judicial First Class Magistrate of Ranni.
The incident occurred on the night of July 21, 2024, when batteries from the solar light system installed on the Panchayat road in the Kumbithodu Scheduled Caste Colony were stolen. The value of the stolen batteries is estimated to be around ₹10,000.
The case was initiated following a complaint by local ward member Satish. Sub-Inspector Sai Senan of the Vechuchira police station registered the FIR and began an initial investigation. Following a detailed inquiry led by Inspector M.R. Suresh, the accused was arrested, and a charge sheet was filed in court. The prosecution was represented by Additional Public Prosecutors B. Anilkumar and Soumya Raghu, who presented the case that led to the conviction of the accused.
