Karur Marks One Year Since Tragic Stampede at Political Rally
One year after the Karur stampede, families remember the 41 lives lost at a political rally, raising questions about safety and accountability.

Karur, September 27 (Daily Kiran) : In Karur, Tamil Nadu, the first anniversary of the tragic stampede during a political rally led by TVK chief Vijay is a somber reminder of the 41 lives lost. Families of the victims and survivors are still grappling with the pain of that day.
On September 27, 2025, supporters of Vijay’s party, Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), began gathering in Velusamipuram early in the morning. Many attendees, including families with children, were eager to catch a glimpse of the actor-turned-politician. As they awaited his arrival, party songs filled the air. When Vijay arrived that evening, chaos ensued as the crowd surged towards his campaign vehicle. The situation quickly escalated into a dangerous crush, resulting in several people falling and becoming trapped.
What began as a political gathering ended in tragedy, with 41 fatalities and over 100 injuries, including children among the deceased. For the families affected, this anniversary serves as a painful reminder of the anticipation, the ensuing chaos, and the heartbreaking news from hospitals that followed the stampede.
The death toll has become a significant part of Karur’s memory of that night. This tragedy has sparked questions regarding the choice of venue, crowd size, crowd management, and safety measures in place.
Political parties have been sharply divided over accountability. The Supreme Court has directed the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to investigate the incident and has established a committee to oversee the inquiry.
The then-state government and TVK announced financial assistance for the victims’ families. However, the tragedy has left a lasting impact on those who were present in Velusamipuram and on relatives who learned of the events that night.
Now serving as Tamil Nadu’s Chief Minister, Vijay visited Karur on July 10, 2026. He met with the victims’ families, provided job appointment letters to some relatives, and announced plans to build a memorial in honor of the deceased.
As the anniversary is observed, the promised memorial stands as a poignant reminder of those lost, whose families had hoped they would return home safely from the rally.
