Bengaluru, September 9 (Daily Kiran) : The Karnataka government has decided to contest a Supreme Court order mandating the release of 6,000 cusecs of Cauvery water to Tamil Nadu daily. This directive was issued by the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee (CWRC) and the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA).
Water Resources Minister N. Cheluvarayaswamy spoke with reporters at Vidhana Soudha in Bengaluru on Wednesday, indicating that Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar had been consulted extensively on the matter. The state is preparing to file a petition in the Supreme Court after seeking advice from legal experts.
Cheluvarayaswamy revealed that the government has also instructed officials to file a review petition against the CWRC’s order. He emphasized that the situation in Karnataka’s reservoirs is critical, stating, “We do not have sufficient water to release. Our top priority is providing drinking water, and we also need to replenish dried ponds and lakes.”
The minister expressed hope that the water crisis could improve with adequate rainfall within a week following the Gauri-Ganesha festival. He firmly stated, “Karnataka will not support the CWRC’s order under any circumstances. Previously, 100 TMC of water was released, while only 30 TMC has been released this year. Nevertheless, the Tamil Nadu government continues to exert pressure on Karnataka.”
Additionally, he mentioned that the government is seriously considering appointing a special advocate to represent the state in the Supreme Court regarding the Cauvery issue, based on a suggestion from former Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai. Discussions with Bommai are expected to take place soon.
