Karnataka Demands Increased LPG Allocation for Hospitality Sector During Meeting with Prime Minister

Bengaluru, March 27: During a recent meeting between the Prime Minister and state Chief Ministers, Karnataka raised its demand for increased LPG allocation, particularly for the hospitality sector.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged a collaborative approach between the central and state governments to address the current situation, similar to the coordination seen during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Karnataka’s Food Minister K.H. Muniyappa represented the state in this virtual meeting, as Chief Minister Siddaramaiah was unavailable. Muniyappa stated that the state has requested an increase in LPG allocation for hotels beyond the current levels.

He explained, “Currently, about 20 percent of the allocation is for commercial use, while another 20 percent is designated for industries, which are prioritized due to their labor-intensive nature. We have requested to raise the allocation for hotels to 40 percent, which would help improve the hospitality sector’s situation.”

Muniyappa emphasized that the Karnataka government has presented several demands and suggestions to the Prime Minister, focusing on achieving energy self-sufficiency. The state highlighted the need to boost solar energy production in both plains and hilly areas to move towards self-reliance.

He added, “We suggested giving more importance to solar energy development. The Prime Minister responded positively.”

Discussions also included enhancing the production of biogas, solar energy, and hydropower as part of broader efforts toward energy self-sufficiency in the coming years.

A follow-up meeting with relevant stakeholders will be held next Monday to further discuss these issues.

Muniyappa spoke to the media after participating in the Prime Minister’s meeting with Chief Ministers, noting that Chief Minister Siddaramaiah could not attend due to a busy schedule.

He concluded, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi advised us to work collaboratively, as we did during the COVID-19 pandemic. In the current situation, we are all striving to improve conditions, and states should cooperate in this effort.”
