Guwahati, September 4 (Daily Kiran) : Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reflected on the Karbi Anglong Peace Accord during a recent statement, marking its fifth anniversary. He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for their significant roles in restoring and maintaining peace in the region.
In a post on social media platform ‘X’, Sarma emphasized that the accord represented a critical turning point for Karbi Anglong, an area historically plagued by violence and unrest. He noted that future historians will recognize the contributions of Modi and Shah in bringing peace to Assam.
“Five years ago today, the Karbi Anglong Peace Accord brought tranquility to a region often engulfed in conflict,” Sarma stated. He described the agreement as more than just a peace treaty, highlighting its role in unlocking development and economic opportunities for the area.
Sarma pointed out that the accord has fostered an environment where residents can benefit from opportunities close to home, allowing them to actively participate in Assam’s broader development journey. The people of Karbi Anglong have become equal partners in the state’s progress, and he expressed confidence that they would continue to reap the benefits of the peace established by the agreement.
The Chief Minister also commended the leadership of Modi and Shah for addressing complex issues related to the region. He noted that their direct involvement was crucial in resolving long-standing challenges and maintaining peace following the accord.
The Karbi Anglong Peace Accord was signed in September 2021 by representatives from the central government, the Assam government, and Karbi groups. Its aim was to end decades of armed conflict and establish a framework for greater development and political stability in the region.
Sarma concluded by stating that the advantages of peace are evident, with opportunities returning to the area and residents increasingly able to build their futures in their home state.
