New Delhi, April 25: Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals and Fertilizers, JP Nadda, has rejected Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge’s claims regarding a fertilizer shortage, labeling them as politically motivated.
Nadda stated that Kharge’s remarks aim to mislead farmers and spread unnecessary fear. He accused the Congress party of viewing farmers merely as a vote bank while promoting false information instead of providing accurate facts. He emphasized that the data clearly shows that the Narendra Modi government has consistently supported farmers, ensuring that fertilizer availability remains well above the national requirement.
Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, farmers have been shielded from the impacts of international price fluctuations. Nadda pointed out that while the global price of a bag of urea exceeds ₹4,000, Indian farmers are able to purchase it for just ₹266.5. Similarly, a bag of DAP, which costs over ₹4,000 internationally, is available to farmers at approximately ₹1,350.
He expressed surprise at Kharge’s dissemination of such misleading information, especially given his position as a leader of the opposition.
Nadda further noted that the current stock of fertilizers is in a significantly better position compared to last year. According to him, the stock of DAP has increased by over 50%, NPK stock has risen by nearly 30%, and urea availability remains adequate and stable.
He mentioned that he has personally communicated with several Chief Ministers and Agriculture Ministers to ensure smooth fertilizer availability. Additionally, strict actions are being taken against hoarding, black marketing, and illegal sales in collaboration with state governments.
The central minister also highlighted that the government has arranged for 2.5 million metric tons of urea through global tenders and has secured alternative supply sources via Indian embassies.
