New Delhi: Former South African cricketer JP Duminy has praised right-handed explosive batsman Tristan Stubbs, who missed out on selection for South Africa’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad. Duminy highlighted Stubbs’ impressive captaincy for Sunrisers Eastern Cape in the SA20 league and his role in leading the team to the top of the points table.
Speaking to the Indian media in a virtual session organised by SA20 on Thursday, Duminy said that although Stubbs’ exclusion from the World Cup squad is disappointing, it presents a great opportunity to shift focus. “From a leadership perspective, this is a chance to concentrate on other players and teams,” he remarked.
Duminy added that while Stubbs has not produced big scores recently, seeing him in the captain’s role is encouraging. “I think he is an excellent captain. For me, that is unique. He is definitely someone who leads by performance, which is a great leadership quality. I have no doubt he will do some amazing things in this SA20 season,” Duminy said.
He further stated that if Stubbs gets an opportunity as a replacement player in the World Cup squad, he is confident Stubbs will perform well with the bat.
Stubbs’ recent form as a batsman in T20 cricket has been below expectations, which led to his omission from South Africa’s World Cup squad. In five SA20 matches, he has scored only 28 runs. South Africa has chosen Jason Smith in place of Stubbs for the tournament.
