New Delhi, September 28 (Daily Kiran) : CPI-M Rajya Sabha member John Brittas has written to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann regarding recent events at Lovely Professional University (LPU). He expressed concerns for the safety of students, particularly those from Kerala, and urged the chief minister to intervene promptly.
In his letter, Brittas noted that the incidents at LPU have created an atmosphere of anxiety among students and their families nationwide. He highlighted that many students from Kerala, including numerous female students living in hostels, are currently enrolled at the university. Regardless of the truth behind the ongoing allegations and counter-allegations, he emphasized that the primary responsibility of state officials and university administration is to ensure the safety of every student.
Brittas called for adequate security measures for students residing in hostels amid the prevailing climate of fear. He also requested that essential services be provided and a reliable system be established for students to seek immediate assistance if needed. Furthermore, he insisted that parents should receive continuous updates regarding their children’s safety and well-being.
The MP expressed concern that students’ legitimate demands and peaceful protests should not be associated with incidents of violence, arson, or damage to public property. He stated that any investigation should be based on credible evidence and that those truly responsible for any crimes must be identified.
Brittas argued that no student should be arbitrarily detained simply for participating in protests or voicing their legitimate concerns. Actions that intimidate, harass, collectively punish, or unlawfully target students must be avoided. While strict action can be taken against specific incidents of violence, it is crucial to fully uphold the fundamental rights and dignity of students during such processes.
According to Brittas, the current situation requires a calm and measured response. While legal actions should be taken in cases of violence, it is inappropriate to view the entire student community with suspicion or retaliate against them.
He appealed to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann for personal intervention to ensure comprehensive security arrangements in and around all hostels. Additionally, he requested that students wishing to return home be assisted in doing so safely. No illegal actions should be taken against students merely for participating in peaceful protests or raising their concerns.
