Jayanta Talukdar: The First Indian to Win Gold at FITA Meteksan World Cup

New Delhi, March 1: Archery is a traditional art form in India. Historically, it was a skill used to conquer enemies. In modern times, archery is recognized as a prestigious sport played on international platforms. Among the archers who have showcased their talent globally and brought pride to the nation, Jayanta Talukdar stands out.

Jayanta Talukdar was born on March 2, 1986, in Guwahati, Assam, a state known for its tribal diversity. Archery enjoys immense popularity in Assam, which influenced Jayanta’s early interest in the sport. Through hard work and skill, he quickly excelled and achieved significant success.

Talukdar was part of the Indian team that won a silver medal at the 2004 Junior World Championships. In 2006, he made history by winning a gold medal at the FITA Meteksan World Cup, becoming the first Indian archer to do so. That same year, he also secured a gold medal at the South Asian Games and a bronze medal in the team competition at the Asian Games.

On June 21, 2012, Jayanta Talukdar was selected for the Indian men’s recurve archery team for the London 2012 Olympics. He competed in both the individual and team events but was eliminated in the first round of the individual competition by Jacob Wookie. The Indian team also lost in the first round to Japan. In November 2015, he won a bronze medal in the recurve mixed team event at the 2015 Asian Archery Championships alongside Deepika Kumari.

Jayanta Talukdar has played a significant role in popularizing archery in India and establishing the sport’s international recognition. In 2007, the Government of India honored him with the Arjuna Award. The Assam government appointed him as a Deputy Superintendent of Police.
