Srinagar, 2 January. Due to clear skies, the minimum temperature in Jammu and Kashmir fell on Friday. The Meteorological Department has forecasted cloudy weather for the next 48 hours.
Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of 1 degree Celsius, Gulmarg minus 7 degrees, and Pahalgam minus 6.2 degrees Celsius.
The night temperature in Jammu city was 6 degrees Celsius, Katra 6.5, Batote 2.8, Banihal minus 1.1, and Doda minus 2.8 degrees Celsius.
The weather department predicts generally dry weather from 2 January to 5 January.
The department also stated that the 40-day severe cold period known as Chillai Kalan began on 21 December. So far, no snowfall has occurred in the valley’s plains during this period. However, some snowfall was recorded in upper areas and tourist spots like Gulmarg and Sonamarg on New Year’s Eve, much to the delight of visitors celebrating the occasion.
Due to the lack of heavy snowfall during Chillai Kalan, there may be difficulties in the summer months ahead.
When asked about potential problems in summer despite snowfall in the mountains, scientists explained, “It is simple. If there is one foot of snow on the plains, it is expected that the higher areas will have five to seven feet of snow. When places like Gulmarg and Sonamarg receive less than one foot of snow, how will the always-full water reservoirs in the higher regions get replenished?”
Residents of Srinagar, Budgam, Ganderbal, Anantnag, Kulgam, Pulwama, Shopian, Baramulla, Bandipora, and Kupwara are eagerly awaiting the first snowfall of the season. Children in these towns and cities are missing out on the joys associated with the season’s first snow.
For environmental reasons, locals are fervently praying for abundant snowfall this winter. The meteorological forecast indicates dry weather, while Chillai Kalan is expected to end on 30 January.
