New Delhi, August 6: Former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Deep Dasgupta believes that Ravindra Jadeja’s extensive experience on spin-friendly pitches will be vital for the upcoming Test series in Sri Lanka.
Many players in the current squad are set to make their debut on a Test tour of Sri Lanka, while only Jadeja and KL Rahul have prior experience playing Test cricket there. Rahul was part of the Indian team during tours in 2015 and 2017, and Jadeja played in the victorious 3-0 series in 2017.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Dasgupta stated, “When it comes to experience, this is the first Test series for many players in Sri Lanka. Jadeja is someone who has played here before. It’s not just about coming in and hitting the ball to take wickets on spin-friendly pitches. Instead, it requires variations in pace, line, and length to perform well. As we’ve seen with fast bowling, when there’s a green pitch, many players get excited and start bowling short balls. While there may be lateral movement, it doesn’t guarantee a wicket. Bowling with the right line and length on spin-friendly pitches is an art that induces turn.”
Dasgupta praised Jadeja, saying, “Jadeja knows how to utilize his experience. He has played on such pitches before, including in Sri Lanka. I think it will be important for him to share his knowledge with the newer and younger players.” The two-match Test series between India and Sri Lanka is set to begin on August 15, with the first match taking place at Galle International Cricket Stadium. The second match will be held at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo starting August 23.
