Tel Aviv, March 12: Israel’s opposition leader, Yair Lapid, addressed journalists on Thursday, stating that Israel is engaged in a war in the north due to attacks from Hezbollah and Iran, which are targeting the region with drones and rockets. He emphasized that Israel is fighting a just war to ensure the safety of all its citizens and to protect them from terrorist organizations.
Lapid explained, “If you want to know why we are fighting this war in northern Israel, it is because if the sirens go off right now, you must run immediately, or you could die within ten seconds, as Hezbollah’s terrorist organization is bombarding this area. Iran is sending drones and rockets here. Therefore, we are fighting a just war to keep all Israelis safe and to prevent harm from terrorist organizations or regimes.”
This statement comes amid ongoing conflicts in West Asia, which escalated following joint U.S. and Israeli attacks on February 28. These strikes resulted in the deaths of Iran’s Supreme Leader Khamenei and several senior military commanders. In retaliation, Iran launched drone and missile attacks on U.S. and Israeli targets, as well as regional capitals and allied locations.
Meanwhile, Israel’s health ministry reported that 179 injured individuals were admitted to hospitals in the last 24 hours, including both civilians and soldiers. The ministry did not specify the exact cause of the injuries, but it is believed that most were not directly injured by missile attacks but rather while trying to reach shelters.
According to the ministry, since February 28, a total of 2,745 people have been hospitalized, with 85 still receiving treatment. Among them, 11 are in serious condition, 10 are in moderate condition, and 64 are reported to be in good condition.
Earlier in the day, Israel announced that Iran had launched a ballistic missile attack on the country, marking the fourth such attack after midnight. Initial military assessments indicated that the missile was intercepted, and there were no reports of injuries.
During this period, sirens were activated in Jerusalem, southern areas, and parts of the West Bank.
