Seoul, May 19: The Israeli military has intercepted a humanitarian aid fleet bound for Gaza, detaining a South Korean activist. According to a civic group, the activist, Kim Dong-hyun, was aboard the vessel named ‘Kairiakos X’ when it was stopped near Cyprus late Monday night (Seoul time).
The group advocating for Palestinian freedom reported that Kim is likely being held on an Israeli warship alongside other activists from different countries.
Kim had set sail for Gaza earlier this month, despite a government travel ban on the area. Prior to this incident, another activist, Kim Ah-hyun, had also attempted to reach Gaza without government approval. After trying to enter in October, her passport was revoked. She was detained by the Israeli military at that time but was later released.
The civic group noted that the vessel carrying Kim is currently near ‘Kairiakos X’ and is at risk of being seized as well.
Under South Korean regulations, citizens are prohibited from entering or residing in Gaza without government permission. Violators may face up to one year in prison or a fine of 1 million won (approximately $6,685).
According to Yonhap News Agency, the group held a press conference in front of the Israeli embassy in Seoul, demanding the immediate release of the detained activist. They also urged the South Korean government to take all possible measures for his swift release. The group emphasized that this campaign is a response to the international community’s silence regarding Israel’s alleged “genocide” over the past two years.
