Tel Aviv, March 4: Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has stated that any leader chosen by the Iranian government to succeed Ali Khamenei will be “clearly targeted.”
He emphasized that any leader who acts against Israel or threatens its existence will be on Israel’s radar. Katz asserted that it does not matter what the name or location of this leader is; Israel will find them.
According to The Times of Israel, Katz remarked, “Any leader appointed by the Iranian government who plans to eliminate Israel, threaten the U.S. and allied nations, and oppress the Iranian people will clearly be our next target.”
He added, “It does not matter what their name is or where they hide.”
Katz further stated, “We will continue to work closely with our American allies to eliminate the capabilities of the Iranian government and create conditions for the Iranian people to overthrow it and bring in someone else.”
On Wednesday, it was announced that Khamenei’s son, Mojtaba, has been appointed as the country’s supreme leader. This decision was made by Iran’s Assembly of Experts. The announcement came on the same day as the U.S.-Israel joint airstrikes that resulted in the deaths of several top commanders, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
A special report by Iran International indicated that this appointment was made under pressure from the powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Sources revealed that due to the current war situation, a full meeting of the Assembly of Experts was not possible, leading to the decision being made through virtual meetings and internal consultations.
The report suggests that Mojtaba’s selection is politically sensitive, especially following the recent U.S.-Israel attacks that killed his father, Ali Khamenei. These attacks have heightened tensions and confrontations across the Middle East.
The Islamic Republic of Iran has always presented itself as an ideological alternative to hereditary monarchy. This means that the Iranian system does not support power being passed down through family lines. Therefore, if the son takes over after the father, it raises questions about the principles of the regime.
A three-day mourning ceremony in memory of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei will begin at midnight on Wednesday (Indian Standard Time) in Tehran. According to Iran’s Tasnim News Agency, people will gather at Tehran’s Grand Mosalla to pay their respects. The date for Khamenei’s burial and further details have not yet been disclosed.
