Jerusalem, April 26: The Israeli cabinet has approved the appointment of Michael Lotem as the country’s first ambassador to Somaliland, potentially igniting a new diplomatic dispute in the Horn of Africa region, as reported by Israeli media outlet JNS.
Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar announced Lotem’s appointment on April 15. Lotem is a seasoned diplomat, having served as an ambassador to Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, and Seychelles until August 2025. He has also represented Israel in Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan.
Reports indicate that this appointment will be “non-resident,” meaning Lotem will manage bilateral relations with Somaliland while residing in Jerusalem.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in 1991 but has not been recognized by most countries. Israel’s move is seen as sensitive in the context of regional politics.
Somalia has reacted sharply, deeming the decision a violation of its sovereignty. The Somali Guardian cited the Somali Foreign Ministry, stating that it outright rejects any attempts to grant diplomatic recognition to any part of its territory, warning that such actions could undermine regional stability.
Additionally, several Muslim-majority countries, including Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Egypt, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Indonesia, have issued a joint statement condemning Israel’s action, labeling it a “clear violation” of Somalia’s sovereignty.
Notably, Israel announced its recognition of Somaliland as an independent country on December 26, 2025. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel plans to enhance cooperation with Somaliland in agriculture, health, technology, and economic sectors.
