New Delhi, April 26: Recent attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran may create conditions that the Islamic State-Khorasan Province (ISKP) could exploit for an extended period, a report warned on Saturday.
According to the report, increasing instability in Iran could have repercussions that extend beyond its borders, impacting regional and global security.
Writing for India Narrative, diplomacy and international cooperation expert Peter Knuppe noted that the U.S. invasion of Iraq in 2003 indirectly paved the way for the emergence of groups like ISIS. He explained that the Sunni backlash against the shifting power dynamics in Iraq attracted foreign fighters from around the world.
Knuppe pointed out that while the so-called caliphate may have ended, its remnants still linger in parts of West Asia, Africa, and Asia. The pressing question now is whether the current situation could lead to a resurgence of organizations like ISIS and Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin.
He emphasized that the spread of weapons, weak governance, public discontent, human rights violations, oppression, and an opportunistic environment are factors that facilitate the rise of extremist groups. In such conditions, terrorist organizations can capitalize on public anger to boost recruitment and violence.
The report indicated that escalating tensions in Iran and a divisive ‘us versus them’ mentality could present opportunities for ISKP leadership, potentially increasing the threat of targeted attacks against Shia communities, institutions, and individuals.
