Nagpur: Wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan is set for a return to the Indian T20 side as the team prepares to face New Zealand in the upcoming T20 series and the 2026 T20 World Cup. Despite Sanju Samson being the first-choice wicketkeeper, captain Suryakumar Yadav confirmed Kishan’s place in the playing eleven for the Nagpur match.
On the eve of the first T20 match in Nagpur, captain Suryakumar Yadav held a press conference where he announced that Ishan Kishan would bat at number three. This statement ensures Kishan’s comeback to the Indian jersey after nearly 26 months.
Although Ishan Kishan usually opens the innings, he has also played in the middle order for India and domestic teams. His adaptability means batting at number three should not pose any significant challenge.
Tilak Varma, initially part of the squad, is out for the first three matches due to injury. Shreyas Iyer has been brought in as his replacement in the squad, but Kishan’s spot in the playing eleven remains secure. He is expected to take up the crucial third position in the batting order.
Ishan Kishan is regarded as a fine T20 batsman with consistent performances across domestic cricket, IPL, and international matches. However, his record against New Zealand in T20 internationals is modest. In seven matches and seven innings against New Zealand, Kishan has scored 103 runs at an average of 14.71 without a half-century. This series provides him an opportunity to improve those numbers.
Kishan last played an international T20 on 28 November 2023 against Australia in Guwahati. Overall, he has played 32 T20 internationals, scoring 796 runs with six half-centuries to his name.
