Vienna, March 30: The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has reported that Iran’s heavy water production facility in Khondab, central Iran, has been severely damaged and is no longer operational.
The IAEA announced on the social media platform X that, based on independent analysis of satellite images and information from the facility, it confirmed the damage reported by Iran on March 27. The plant has sustained significant damage and is currently out of operation. Importantly, there is no declared nuclear material at the facility, as reported by the Xinhua News Agency.
On March 27, the IAEA stated that it had been informed by Iran about an attack on the Khondab heavy water production plant. However, it confirmed that no radiation threat was detected. These attacks occurred amid the ongoing U.S.-Israel-Iran conflict, which escalated on February 28. Prior to Saturday, the IAEA had confirmed that Iran reported new attacks on major facilities, including the heavy water plant in Khondab.
The agency further announced on X that it received information from Iran indicating that the heavy water production facility was attacked again on the same day. Due to the absence of declared nuclear material, there is no radiation risk.
Additionally, Iran reported that the Khuzestan Steel Production Factory, which uses sealed radioactive sources—Cobalt-60 and Cesium-137 for industrial purposes—was also targeted. Officials stated that there was no radiation leak from the facility, which is operating normally. Earlier on Friday, the IAEA expressed concern over military activities near the Bushehr nuclear power plant, marking the third such incident in ten days.
