Tehran, June 23 — In the wake of recent US military strikes, Iran has formally approached the United Nations Security Council, asserting its right to respond decisively to American and Israeli aggression. Amir Saeed Iravani, Iran’s Permanent Representative and Ambassador to the UN, declared that Tehran reserves the legal right to defend itself and respond to what it deems unlawful attacks on its nuclear sites.
According to Iran’s state-run Mehr News Agency, Iravani raised the matter during a Security Council session, urging the 15-member body to address the recent strikes by the United States on Iran’s nuclear facilities. He argued that Washington’s actions constitute blatant aggression under international law, emphasizing that Iran is merely exercising its right to self-defense.
Accusations of Terrorism Support and Undermining Diplomacy
During the session, Iravani accused the US of fueling terrorism in the region. He further noted that ongoing diplomatic efforts — particularly discussions between Iranian officials and European leaders — have been severely undermined by the American military actions, complicating any return to the negotiating table.
“Iran maintains its full legal right, under international law, to defend itself against the United States and its proxy, the Israeli regime,” Iravani stated.
Foreign Minister Holds US Accountable
Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, speaking at a press conference in Istanbul, reiterated that the US must bear full responsibility for the consequences of its attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. He stressed that Tehran reserves the right to explore all available options in response.
“The United States has violated all international norms by attacking Iran’s nuclear sites,” Araghchi asserted. “Iran will never compromise its sovereignty, independence, or territorial integrity. The American allegations against Iran are politically motivated.”
He also condemned the assassination of IRGC Quds Force commander Qassem Soleimani, labeling it an act of terrorism.
As tensions between Tehran and Washington continue to escalate, Iran’s latest appeal to the UN signals a determination to pursue both diplomatic and retaliatory avenues in defending its national interests.
