IPL 2026: Pathirana and Hasaranga Yet to Complete Fitness Test for SLC

New Delhi, April 6: Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has confirmed that Matheesha Pathirana and Wanindu Hasaranga are among the 15 Sri Lankan players who have not yet completed the mandatory fitness test under the central contract. Additionally, six other players have failed this fitness test at least once.

Out of 45 contracted players, only 24 have successfully passed the test so far. The reasons for not taking the test vary. Some players are injured, while others are facing logistical issues.

However, the spotlight is primarily on Hasaranga and Pathirana, as both are set to play in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026. Hasaranga is part of the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), while Pathirana plays for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Their fitness and ability to clear the test are crucial, as it directly impacts their IPL and international cricket schedules.

Hasaranga’s situation appears to be the most concerning. An SLC source revealed, “Hasaranga has not yet requested a No Objection Certificate (NOC).” The 28-year-old leg-spinner suffered a left hamstring strain during a T20 World Cup match against Ireland in February. It remains unclear when he will take his fitness test.

Pathirana also faced injury during the same tournament, suffering a calf muscle strain in a match against Australia. Reports indicate that he has started bowling in the nets. Close sources to the player are hopeful that he will arrive in India to play in the IPL by mid-April. However, SLC has not yet set an official date for the mandatory fitness test, although indications suggest it may take place next week.

SLC has made significant changes to its fitness culture, extending it to the domestic National Super League, which commenced on Monday.

The fitness test rules for this tournament are somewhat less stringent. Players are required to run only 2 kilometers and complete a skinfold test, with no points awarded. They simply need to exceed the minimum threshold. In contrast, players under central contracts must undergo tests such as a 20-meter sprint, a 5-0-5 agility test, and a counter-movement jump, with each test scoring between one to five points. Additionally, they can earn seven points each from the 2-kilometer run and skinfold test. To pass, a total of 17 points out of 29 is required.

Under the new fitness regulations implemented by SLC, 23 out of 87 players participating in the tournament have failed to meet the minimum fitness standards. These players have until April 19 to pass the fitness test. If they fail, they will still be allowed to continue playing but will not receive match fees. Furthermore, their future representation in the tournament may be jeopardized.
