IPL 2026 Kicks Off with RCB vs SRH Showdown

New Delhi, March 12: The 19th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2026) is set to begin on March 28. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has released the schedule for the first 16 days of the tournament. The opening match will feature the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) against the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. RCB emerged as the champions in the previous season.

In 2017, RCB and SRH also faced off in the season opener. SRH triumphed in that match by 35 runs.

This encounter took place at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. RCB won the toss and opted to bowl first. Batting first, SRH scored 207 runs for the loss of four wickets, thanks to explosive performances from Yuvraj Singh, who made 62 runs off 27 balls, including seven fours and three sixes, Moises Henriques with 52 runs off 37 balls, and Shikhar Dhawan, who contributed 40 runs off 31 balls.

For RCB, Tymal Mills, Aniket Chaudhary, Yuzvendra Chahal, and Stuart Binny each took one wicket.

Chasing a target of 208 runs, RCB fell short, managing only 172 runs in 19.4 overs, losing by 35 runs. Chris Gayle was the top scorer for RCB with 32 runs, followed by Kedar Jadhav with 31 runs and Travis Head with 30 runs.

SRH’s bowling attack was led by Ashish Nehra, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Rashid Khan, each claiming two wickets, while Deepak Hooda and Bipul Sharma took one wicket each.

SRH qualified for the playoffs that season, while RCB finished outside the top four.

The two teams had previously met in the 2016 final, where SRH emerged victorious.

As IPL 2026’s opening match approaches, fans are eager to see whether RCB or SRH will claim the first victory. After last season’s success, RCB is brimming with confidence, while SRH has also thrilled fans with its performances over the past two seasons.
