IPL 2026: Delhi Capitals Face Setback as Mitchell Starc to Miss Initial Matches

New Delhi, March 20: The Delhi Capitals (DC) have received disappointing news ahead of IPL 2026. Their key fast bowler, Australian Mitchell Starc, is likely to miss the early matches of the season. His absence could pose significant challenges for the team during this crucial phase.

Cricket Australia (CA) has confirmed that Starc will not be available at the tournament’s start. His return will depend on how he progresses through his fitness protocols in the coming weeks.

According to CA, the 36-year-old Starc is being carefully managed due to a heavy workload over the past year. He recently played all five Tests in the Ashes series and participated in the final stages of the Big Bash League. During this time, he bowled more deliveries than any fast bowler, except for India’s Mohammed Siraj, in Test cricket.

Starc’s absence is considered critical for the Delhi Capitals, as the team was counting on him to provide an advantage in the early overs with the new ball. He is among the select few fast bowlers capable of changing the game during both powerplay and death overs.

Not only Starc, but also Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood will be unavailable for their respective franchises in the initial matches. Cummins plays for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), while Hazlewood represents Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), meaning these teams will also face early setbacks.

The Delhi Capitals acquired Starc for ₹11.75 crores in the IPL 2025 mega auction. Last season, he took 14 wickets in 11 matches. Although his economy rate exceeded 10, his ability to make an impact in crucial matches has been vital for the team.
