Beirut, April 17: Relief has finally emerged amid rising tensions between Israel and Lebanon. A ceasefire has been implemented between the two nations after ten days of conflict. This announcement was made by U.S. President Donald Trump, aiming to halt the violent clashes that have claimed over 2,000 lives in the past month.
As the ceasefire took effect, the international community expressed its approval and urged all parties to maintain peace. United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres‘s chief spokesperson, Stéphane Dujarric, stated that they welcome all measures that help end violence and suffering on both sides of the “Blue Line.” He also called on the involved parties to fully adhere to the ceasefire.
Guterres expressed his support for the ceasefire announcement between Israel and Lebanon, appreciating the role of the United States in making it possible. He hopes this will pave the way for dialogue towards a long-term resolution of the conflict and assist ongoing efforts for lasting peace in the region. He urged all to respect the ceasefire and comply with international law at all times.
Meanwhile, Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit described the agreement as a positive step towards alleviating the suffering of the Lebanese people. He urged all parties to implement it immediately and to engage in serious negotiations for lasting peace.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Ismail Baghaei, also welcomed the ceasefire, noting that it is part of a two-week truce agreement between Iran and the United States, mediated by Pakistan, aimed at stopping the war.
Egypt called this a significant step towards reducing regional tensions and halting Israeli attacks. The Egyptian Foreign Ministry appealed to the international community to help make this ceasefire permanent, ensure humanitarian aid delivery, and facilitate the return of displaced people.
The United Arab Emirates and Qatar also supported this initiative, expressing hope that it would lay a strong foundation for stability and lasting peace in the region.
It is worth noting that the previous ceasefire, which began in November 2024, was not entirely successful, with attacks continuing almost daily. The conflict reignited on March 2 when Hezbollah launched rockets at Israel, prompting heavy airstrikes in Lebanon in response.
