Indias Foreign Minister Updates on Middle East Tensions and Citizen Safety

New Delhi, March 9: India’s External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday that Prime Minister Narendra Modi is closely monitoring the evolving situation in the Middle East. A significant number of Indian citizens reside in Gulf countries, prompting a rapid operation to ensure their safe return to India amid the current turmoil.

Dr. Jaishankar emphasized that the ongoing conflict poses a particular concern for India, given the large Indian workforce in the Gulf region.

As the session began, Leader of the Opposition Mallikarjun Kharge raised concerns about the fatalities among Indian citizens due to the ongoing conflict, which led to disruptions in the house. Chairman C.P. Radhakrishnan requested Kharge to conclude his remarks and invited the External Affairs Minister to present his statement.

Amidst loud protests, Minister Jaishankar shed light on the situation in the Middle East, noting that the conflict escalated following attacks by the U.S. and Israel, resulting in widespread devastation and the deaths of several senior leaders of Islamic regimes. Since then, conditions have deteriorated further.

He reported that the tensions have spread across multiple countries. The government had expressed deep concern in a statement issued on February 28, urging all parties to exercise restraint, avoid escalation, and prioritize the safety of civilians.

Dr. Jaishankar stated, “We believed that dialogue and diplomacy should be pursued to de-escalate tensions and resolve internal issues. It is also crucial to respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries in the region.”

He revealed that a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting was convened on March 1, chaired by the Prime Minister, to discuss the airstrikes in Iran and subsequent attacks in several Gulf nations. The CCS expressed concern for the safety of the Indian community in the region and considered the impact on security, economic, and commercial activities.

The committee was informed about the difficulties faced by Indian travelers and students taking exams in these countries. It directed all relevant ministries and departments to take appropriate measures to address these issues. The Prime Minister is closely monitoring new developments, and the concerned ministries are collaborating to respond effectively.

Dr. Jaishankar remarked, “The fighting is escalating, and the security situation in the region has significantly worsened. We have observed that the conflict has spread to other countries, leading to increased devastation and casualties. Normal life and economic activities across the region have been visibly affected, and in some cases, have come to a halt.”

Therefore, we reiterated our appeal for dialogue and diplomacy on March 3, urging for a swift end to the fighting. I am confident that the entire house shares my sorrow over the loss of lives and property.”
