Indian Stock Market Faces Turbulence Amid Rising Oil Prices and Global Uncertainty

The Indian stock market experienced a significant decline last week, driven by rising oil prices and global economic uncertainties.

Mumbai, October 24 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian stock market faced significant challenges last week, with rising crude oil prices and global economic uncertainties weighing heavily on investor sentiment. The shortened trading week, due to holidays, failed to provide any relief. Both major indices, Sensex and Nifty, recorded declines for the fourth consecutive session.

On the last trading day of the week, Friday, the Indian market closed lower once again. The Sensex fell by 125.56 points, or 0.17%, finishing at 73,123.83. Meanwhile, the Nifty dropped by 87.65 points, or 0.39%, closing at 22,600.00.

Market experts indicate that surging crude oil prices have become a primary concern for domestic markets. As a result, investors have reduced their exposure to riskier assets, leading to significant declines not only in large-cap stocks but also in mid-cap and small-cap shares.

The Nifty 50 index remains under pressure after four consecutive days of decline. Recent sell-offs have weakened the short-term technical structure of the market, making it difficult for the index to maintain its previous recovery.

Analysts are observing the Nifty’s immediate resistance level at 22,800, with 23,000 serving as a crucial threshold above that. Conversely, the Sensex is expected to find support between 72,600 and 72,500.

The broader market’s downturn has been pronounced. Due to high valuations and reduced leveraged positions, mid-cap and small-cap stocks have seen sharper corrections, while large-cap stocks have fared relatively better.

In terms of sector performance, the Information Technology (IT) sector stood out as a relative strength. Despite facing selling pressure at the beginning of the week, IT stocks managed to end the week nearly stable, buoyed by strong quarterly results and increased investor interest.

In contrast, sectors sensitive to interest rates, such as consumer durables, metals, and real estate, experienced the most significant pressure. There was heavy selling in these areas due to rising cost concerns and margin pressures.

In the global commodity market, Brent crude reached a six-month high on Friday, closing up 3.1% at $116.72 per barrel, the highest since April 29. Meanwhile, West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude rose by 3.8% to $103.27 per barrel.

Throughout the week, Brent crude prices increased by 6.2%, while WTI gained 2%. Analysts believe that if crude oil prices remain elevated for an extended period, it could lead to increased transportation and energy costs, adversely affecting consumer demand and putting additional pressure on margins in oil-dependent industries. Thus, investors are expected to closely monitor oil price movements and related global developments in the coming weeks.
