Aichi, September 26 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian men’s kabaddi team triumphed over Iran with a score of 40-34, securing the gold medal at the Asian Games held in Aichi on September 26. After the victory, player Jaydeep revealed that the team brought along traditional treats like churma, laddus, and khoya to stay connected to home while focusing on their title defense.
Speaking after the match, Jaydeep emphasized the team’s concentration on their campaign and the formidable challenge posed by Iran. “We brought churma from home. We also had laddus and khoya, but the food here was good too, with options like paratha and roti,” he said.
The match took place at the Tokai Citizens Gymnasium, where the Indian squad completed an unbeaten run in Aichi-Nagoya. The first half was fiercely contested, with India trailing 17-18 at halftime. However, after the break, India intensified their game, gradually taking control and establishing a five-point lead with ten minutes remaining. In the final moments, the team maintained their composure, with Sumit, Rahul Sethpal, and the defense ensuring Iran had no chance to come back.
Jaydeep noted that the team was aware of the challenges posed by Iran, stating, “We were fully focused. We had been waiting for this match. Iran is a very strong team. This was the only match between us and the gold medal, and we came here to win it.”
He dedicated the gold medal to his brother, acknowledging the support he received throughout his journey. “I dedicate this medal to my brother. He has supported me a lot,” Jaydeep remarked.
In addition, the kabaddi player advocated for greater support for various sports beyond cricket. He stressed that athletes in different disciplines work hard and face injuries. “Everyone should play cricket; it’s a good thing, but we must also support other sports and help them grow,” he concluded.
