Indian Air Force Unveils Ambitious Drone Roadmap for Future Warfare

The Indian Air Force presents a strategic roadmap for 16 drone categories, aiming to enhance its future combat capabilities.

New Delhi, October 21 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian Air Force (IAF) is gearing up for future aerial warfare, recognizing the pivotal role that drones and autonomous systems will play. On October 21, the IAF outlined its long-term roadmap for unmanned and autonomous systems during a special workshop held at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. This initiative categorizes 16 types of systems into four distinct groups, aimed at developing advanced technology domestically to meet military needs.

The workshop brought together over 100 senior professionals from the defense industry, alongside high-ranking officials from the IAF and the Ministry of Defence. The IAF emphasized that modern air operations now require more than just traditional aircraft; unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), autonomous systems, and coordinated drone swarms are reshaping military strategies.

The ability to integrate manned and unmanned aircraft will be crucial for future missions. With this in mind, the IAF has presented its requirements directly to the industry. The roadmap includes systems categorized as strategic, operational, tactical, and distributed, which can be deployed in large numbers at lower costs.

Previously introduced during the IAF’s ‘Dronathon’ program, this roadmap is now being systematically communicated to industry stakeholders, startups, educational institutions, and research organizations. The workshop provided these entities with a unique opportunity to engage directly with IAF officials and gain insights into future needs.

Air Marshal Premkumar Krishna Swamy, Director General of Weapons Systems at IAF, stated that the Indian Air Force has been at the forefront of adopting unmanned systems in the country. He expressed a commitment to maintaining this leadership in the future.

He further noted that air power is rapidly transitioning towards the use of autonomous systems and drone swarms. As a result, the IAF is clearly articulating its needs to the industry to ensure focused development of essential technologies for timely integration into the military.
