Jalandhar, October 21 (Daily Kiran) : Punjab’s Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav paid tribute to fallen officers on Wednesday at the Punjab Armed Police (PAP) headquarters in Jalandhar. He laid a floral wreath at the Police Martyrs Memorial during the observance of the 67th State Police Memorial Day. This day is dedicated to honoring police personnel who lost their lives while protecting the nation’s integrity and combating terrorism and crime.
The ceremony was led by DGP Yadav, who was joined by Special DGP (Law and Order) Praveen Kumar Sinha and ADGP M.F. Farooqui. Yadav described the Punjab Police as an extraordinary and proud force that has served the country with exceptional courage during times of war, peace, and covert conflicts. He noted that since September 1981, a total of 1,804 brave officers have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, including two who died this year.
“Today, the peaceful environment we enjoy is a result of the sacrifices made by these brave martyrs,” Yadav stated. He emphasized that the history of the Punjab Police is filled with valor, selfless service, and a steadfast resolve to eradicate terrorism. The force remains committed to safeguarding the borders and maintaining communal harmony in the region.
The ceremony at the PAP campus included a formal parade, during which the commandant read out the names of officers who had fallen in the past year. The event concluded with a moment of silence and the laying of wreaths by senior officials.
In a post-ceremony media briefing, DGP Yadav highlighted the Punjab Police’s decisive actions against drug trafficking. Since March 16, 2022, over 95,000 cases have been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, resulting in the arrest of more than 127,000 individuals and the seizure of over 7,260 kilograms of heroin.
Yadav noted that the Punjab Police has frozen assets worth ₹902 crore linked to drug trafficking networks, marking one of the largest asset seizure operations in the country. He also reported an unprecedented conviction rate of 90% in these cases.
Additionally, he mentioned that since the launch of anti-gangster operations in April 2022, 1,288 organized crime networks have been dismantled, leading to the arrest of over 3,300 gangsters. The ongoing anti-drug campaign, “Yudh Nasha Virudh,” has now evolved into an intensive 60-day initiative, featuring round-the-clock joint monitoring of identified drug-affected areas by senior police officials and civil administration.
The DGP stated that the multifaceted campaign aims to restore safety in vulnerable areas by enhancing community engagement and developing sports facilities for youth.
