New Delhi, July 11: The central government is contemplating the launch of a sector-specific AI Data Trust pilot project at IIT Hyderabad to bolster India’s capabilities in artificial intelligence (AI). The initiative aims to provide high-quality Indian datasets securely and responsibly for AI development. Railway Minister and Minister of Electronics and IT, Ashwini Vaishnaw, shared this information during discussions with industry representatives in Hyderabad on Saturday.
Vaishnaw noted that industry leaders suggested establishing data trusts within Indian educational institutions to ensure reliable and quality Indian data for AI development. He welcomed this proposal and mentioned that the government could initiate this pilot project at IIT Hyderabad in collaboration with the industry.
Under the proposed framework, datasets related to various sectors will be securely stored. Clear rules and policies will be established for the use of these datasets. Subsequently, these datasets will be made available to startups, researchers, and companies developing AI-based technologies, enabling them to create AI models and applications tailored to Indian needs. Additionally, necessary security measures will be implemented to ensure the safe and responsible use of data.
The minister emphasized the importance of increasing the availability of reliable domestic data in India. This will enhance the accuracy of AI models developed in the country, making them more aligned with local needs and competitive on a global scale.
He stated that such initiatives would strengthen India’s AI ecosystem and play a crucial role in the development of indigenous AI technologies.
Furthermore, the minister highlighted the rapid growth of India’s electronics manufacturing sector, which has surpassed a production value of ₹13 lakh crore. He noted that electronics has now become India’s third-largest export sector, with mobile phones emerging as the country’s largest single export product. This reflects India’s growing reputation as a reliable manufacturing and technology hub on the global stage.
Notably, last month, Ashwini Vaishnaw inaugurated a state-of-the-art production unit of global manufacturing company Jabil in Maharashtra. During this event, he mentioned that this high-tech plant would manufacture essential equipment for AI data centers, playing a significant role in advancing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Make in India, Make for the World.’
