New Delhi, May 9: Indian Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar conducted several high-level meetings during his official visit to Trinidad and Tobago. These discussions focused on bilateral cooperation, cultural ties, educational initiatives, and regional partnerships.
Upon arriving in Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday morning, Jaishankar expressed his excitement on the social media platform X, stating, “Happy to be back in Trinidad and Tobago. Thank you to Foreign Minister Shawn Sobers for the warm welcome. Looking forward to a productive visit over the next two days.”
During his visit, Jaishankar met with Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar to discuss bilateral and regional issues. Sharing details about the meeting on X, he noted, “It was a pleasure to meet PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar. I value her insights on bilateral cooperation and regional matters.”
The Minister also participated in a program to distribute ‘Made in India’ laptops to schoolchildren alongside Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar. Referring to a previous commitment made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Jaishankar remarked, “I joined PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar in the program to provide ‘Made in India’ laptops to schoolchildren in Trinidad and Tobago. This fulfills PM Modi’s promise from last year and sends a message of learning, awareness, and opportunity.”
During a flag-hoisting ceremony related to the Ministry of External Affairs and CARICOM, Jaishankar emphasized the historical ties between the two nations, stating, “India has traditionally enjoyed very good and friendly relations with Trinidad and Tobago. These ties are based on shared history, the struggle against colonialism, and a special connection through cricket. There is much commonality between our peoples.”
Jaishankar also announced several agreements during this visit. In another post, he mentioned, “Today, we signed agreements on tourism, solarization of the Ministry of External Affairs and CARICOM building, quick impact projects, and the establishment of an Ayurveda chair.”
The Foreign Minister was also honored in the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago. Sharing this experience, he wrote, “I feel honored to be welcomed in the Parliament of Trinidad and Tobago. Thank you to PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar for her kind words.”
Cultural engagement was also a highlight of the visit. Jaishankar met with West Indies cricket legend Brian Lara and shared a photo with him on X, captioned, “With the one and only Brian Lara.”
In another post, Jaishankar expressed gratitude for the flag-hoisting ceremony held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Trinidad and Tobago, thanking Brian Lara for joining the event.
It is noteworthy that Foreign Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar arrived in Trinidad and Tobago as the final stop of his official tour across three Caribbean nations, following engagements in Jamaica and Suriname.
