
Mumbai, March 9: The Indian cricket team has emerged as the champion of the T20 World Cup 2026. In a thrilling final held at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium in Ahmedabad, India defeated New Zealand by 96 runs, marking their second consecutive World Cup win.
Following their victory, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav, head coach Gautam Gambhir, ICC President Jay Shah, and BCCI Secretary Devjeet Saikia visited the Hanuman Temple in Ahmedabad to offer prayers with the trophy in hand. The group participated in a ceremonial worship led by the temple priests.
The triumph has sparked celebrations across the nation. With this title, India has made history by becoming the first team to win three T20 World Cups, clinch back-to-back titles, and secure a T20 World Cup victory on home soil.
In the final match, New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and opted to bowl first. The Indian team, with significant contributions from Sanju Samson (89 runs), Abhishek Sharma (52 runs), Ishan Kishan (54 runs), and Shivam Dube (26 runs), set a formidable target of 256 runs, finishing their innings at 5 wickets.
Chasing the target, New Zealand was bowled out for 159 runs in 19 overs. Jasprit Bumrah was the standout bowler for India, taking 4 wickets for just 15 runs in 4 overs. Axar Patel also shone with 3 wickets for 27 runs, while Hardik Pandya, Varun Chakravarthy, and Abhishek Sharma each claimed one wicket.
Sanju Samson, who scored an unbeaten 97 against the West Indies and 89 runs in the semi-final against England, was named Player of the Series. Jasprit Bumrah received the Player of the Match award for his exceptional performance.
