Ahmedabad, May 9: The “Somnath Amrit Parv-2026” festival, held near the first Jyotirlinga of Somnath Mahadev, is brimming with excitement. This event marks a historic moment as the Indian Air Force will conduct an exhilarating ‘Surya Kiran Air Show’ featuring fighter jets on May 11.
During the air show, six aircraft will perform thrilling formations in the sky, including ‘Tricolor Smoke Trail’, ‘Color Smoke’, ‘Loops and Rolls’, ‘Close Formation’, and ‘Diamond Formation’. Attendees, including devotees and local residents, will witness this spectacular display in the presence of the Prime Minister.
Wing Commander Janmeet Sharma of the Indian Air Force shared that the Surya Kiran Air Show will take place at 11 AM, led by the Surya Kiran aerobatics team. The exercise will involve six Hawk MK-132 series fighter jets.
Flight Lieutenant and team commentator Kanwal Sandhu noted that this will be the first time the Surya Kiran Air Show is held at the Somnath temple. The entire exercise will be guided by Group Captain and team leader Ajay Dashrathi.
He emphasized that pilots are trained on these fighter planes. Besides aerial stunts, these jets can be deployed in emergencies, challenging terrains, and wartime situations.
During the Surya Kiran Air Show, the fighter jets will fly at speeds of 800 to 900 kilometers per hour. The team will rehearse on May 10 at 11 AM before the final show, operating from Jamnagar station.
Initially, all six jets will take off together to perform exercises. Later, the teams will split and showcase different formations in the sky.
Regarding coordination, all fighter jet pilots are equipped with radio communication and other gear. Squadron Leader Aman Goyal will remain on the ground, providing pilots with essential guidance on airspeed, distance from each other, and potential hazards.
To ensure safety from birds during stunts, preparations are made in advance. Bird Hazard Control (BHC) is always on standby. Local citizens have been encouraged not to dispose of leftover food two days before the air show to prevent attracting birds.
Additionally, the Surya Kiran team is equipped with fireworks. If necessary, fireworks will be released in the sky to deter birds. These fireworks are designed to scare birds away without causing them harm.
Thus, from ground to air and air to air, the entire Surya Kiran team will coordinate to present thrilling and heart-stopping performances in the Prabhas Kshetra area. The Surya Kiran aerobatics team is preparing for the air show and its rehearsal with aerial observation.
