India Sets T20 World Cup Record with 92 Runs in Powerplay Against New Zealand

Ahmedabad, March 9: India has made history in the T20 World Cup 2026 final against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium. The team scored 92 runs in the powerplay without losing a wicket, matching a world record.

Previously, the West Indies held the record from the T20 World Cup 2024, where they scored 92 runs against Afghanistan in the first six overs, losing just one wicket. The Netherlands ranks second, having scored 91 runs for the loss of one wicket against Ireland in 2014.

In 2016, England scored 89 runs against South Africa in the opening six overs, losing three wickets. In this World Cup, India had also scored 86 runs for the loss of one wicket against Namibia in the same timeframe.

By the end of the first 11 overs, India had scored 137 runs, losing just one wicket. Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson formed a solid opening partnership, adding 98 runs in 7.1 overs.

Abhishek scored 52 runs off 21 balls, hitting three sixes and six fours before getting out. Sanju Samson continued to build a strong score alongside Ishan Kishan, currently not out at 27 runs. Samson has scored 50 runs off 33 balls.

New Zealand’s playing eleven features: Tim Seifert (wicketkeeper), Finn Allen, Rachin Ravindra, Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman, Daryl Mitchell, James Neesham, Mitchell Santner (captain), Matt Henry, Lockie Ferguson, and Jacob Duffy.
