India Launches First Barrier-Free Toll System for Seamless Payments

New Delhi, May 1: India’s Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced the launch of the country’s first Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) barrier-free tolling system on Friday. This innovative system has been implemented at the Choryasi Toll Plaza on the Surat-Bharuch section of NH-48 in Gujarat, allowing vehicles to pay tolls without stopping.

The modern system utilizes advanced technologies such as Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) and FASTag, enabling tolls to be deducted while vehicles are in motion. This information was provided by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

According to the ministry, this system will reduce travel time, decrease congestion on highways, save fuel, lower vehicle emissions, and minimize human intervention in toll operations.

The statement emphasized that the introduction of MLFF marks a significant step towards the digitization of India’s toll system and the modernization of national highways, aligning with international standards.

Gadkari stated that this barrier-free tolling system will simplify life for the public and facilitate business operations, as it will enhance the speed and efficiency of goods and logistics movement.

The Union Minister further noted that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, this initiative represents a major step towards creating world-class, technology-driven, transparent, and traveler-friendly highway infrastructure in the country.

In April, the central government implemented a digital payment system for all national highway toll plazas across the country.

The ministry reported that starting April 10, all user fees at toll plazas are collected exclusively through digital means, such as FASTag and Unified Payments Interface (UPI).

The use of FASTag has surpassed 98% in the country, resulting in a significant transformation of the toll collection system.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has instructed all banks issuing FASTags to promptly verify the vehicle registration numbers (VRN) associated with the FASTags.
