India Emerges as a Global Leader in Green Hydrogen with $9.5 Billion Agreements
India leads the world in green hydrogen supply agreements, with commitments exceeding 555,610 metric tons annually and investments soaring.

New Delhi, October 29 (Daily Kiran) : India has solidified its position as a global frontrunner in green hydrogen, with companies securing supply agreements totaling over 555,610 metric tons per year as of October 2026. This significant milestone was announced by the government on Thursday.
Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi, stated that Indian firms have successfully obtained 23 major contracts, which include commitments for more than 550,000 metric tons annually. Notably, over 70% of this supply is earmarked for global exports. This achievement is expected to boost investments in the clean energy sector by ₹90,000 crore, propelling India toward its net-zero emissions goal while generating green jobs.
In 2026 alone, Indian companies signed 18 new offtake agreements for more than 400,000 metric tons of green hydrogen equivalent. According to an official statement, Indian suppliers are offering the most competitive prices for green ammonia and green methanol worldwide, enhancing India’s position in European and Japanese markets. Green ammonia is emerging as a clean bunkering fuel in the global shipping sector, and it is also being blended with other fuels in thermal power plants to reduce carbon emissions.
The use of products made from green hydrogen is rapidly increasing in fertilizer production and refining sectors across the globe, aiming to lower industrial carbon emissions. Indian companies have formed significant strategic partnerships in major markets and signed binding agreements for green hydrogen supply.
Among the notable contracts is one involving the ACM Group, which has partnered with Japan’s IHI for the supply of 488,000 metric tons of green ammonia annually. The group has also secured a deal with Mitsubishi Gas Chemical (MGC) for the supply of 100,000 metric tons of green methanol per year.
Additionally, L&T and Itochu have established a special purpose vehicle (SPV) for the supply of 300,000 metric tons of green ammonia annually, expected to commence in December 2029. Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has entered into a long-term supply and purchase agreement exceeding $3 billion with South Korea’s Samsung C&T Corporation, one of the largest green ammonia offtake contracts globally, with supply anticipated to start by 2028.
Augsty is in the process of finalizing an offtake agreement with Sri Lanka for 250,000 metric tons of green methanol annually. Other companies, like AM Green, have made three agreements, and emerged as the sole winner in the Asian category of the ‘H2Global’ auction held by Hintco. This includes a long-term purchase agreement for ammonia produced from non-biological sources in Germany, valued at over €585 million over ten years, with the first supply expected in 2029.
AM Green has also secured a firm offtake agreement for 250,000 metric tons of green ammonia annually with Germany’s Uniper and a long-term supply agreement with Japan’s JERA for 70,000 metric tons per year. Juno Jules has signed an offtake agreement with Select Energy GmbH for the supply of 600 tons (approximately 219,000 metric tons per year) of green ammonia daily.
In addition to exports, domestic demand has strengthened under the government’s targeted initiatives. The Strategic Interventions for Green Hydrogen Transition (SIGHT) program has led to agreements for the production and supply of 670,000 metric tons of green ammonia annually across 11 fertilizer units nationwide.
The statement noted that similar projects have been allocated to refineries owned by Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (BPCL), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL), and Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL) for the production and supply of 30,000 metric tons of green hydrogen annually.
