India Celebrates 12 Years of Make in India Initiative, Aims for Global Manufacturing Leadership

On the 12th anniversary of Make in India, Piyush Goyal emphasizes Indias role in global manufacturing and economic growth.

New Delhi, September 25 (Daily Kiran) : Central Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted on September 25 that India is not only manufacturing for its own needs but is also producing goods for the global market. Celebrating the 12th anniversary of the ‘Make in India’ initiative, he expressed confidence in India’s potential to be a manufacturing powerhouse.

“This is not just an achievement; it serves as a reminder of what can be accomplished when a country believes in its capabilities,” Goyal stated. He emphasized that the government’s continuous reforms and decisive actions have bolstered this belief.

Reflecting on the past, Goyal noted that in 2014, there were significant discussions about India’s manufacturing capacity, as many products used in the country were imported. Prime Minister Narendra Modi rejected this notion, envisioning a future where products worldwide proudly bear the ‘Made in India’ label, recognized for their quality.

Goyal pointed to encouraging statistics, revealing that India attracted a record $94.53 billion in annual foreign direct investment (FDI) for the fiscal year 2025-26. From 2014-15 to 2025-26, total FDI inflow reached $843 billion. To enhance globally competitive manufacturing, the government is establishing greenfield industrial smart cities across the country under the National Industrial Corridor Development Program.

He also noted that reforms aimed at improving the ease of doing business have simplified regulations and reduced compliance burdens. Significant sectoral reforms have opened new opportunities for investment and manufacturing.

Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes have accelerated this progress, with an actual investment of ₹2.40 lakh crore expected by March 31, 2026. This initiative has led to ₹23.8 lakh crore in production/sales and ₹15.2 lakh crore in exports, creating over 14.6 million direct and indirect jobs.

Goyal mentioned that sectors such as electronics, telecommunications, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, automobiles, IT hardware, and specialty steel have greatly benefited from the PLI schemes. The Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) has also significantly boosted small enterprises, facilitating over 470 million orders through the platform.

However, the true story of ‘Make in India’ goes beyond these figures. Goyal emphasized that it represents a narrative of confidence instilled in startup founders, entrepreneurs, manufacturers, innovators, exporters, and, most importantly, the people of India. This initiative has fostered a belief that India can create, innovate, and compete on the global stage.

He concluded by stressing that the journey of ‘Make in India’ continues, with a vision to establish India as a global manufacturing superpower, reinforcing the goal of a developed India by 2047.
