New Delhi, September 19 (Daily Kiran) : India and South Africa conducted their first Army-to-Army staff talks in New Delhi from September 16 to 18, 2026. The discussions aimed to bolster defense cooperation through increased training exchanges and joint capability-building initiatives.
Following the meeting, the Indian Army announced, “This marks the first Army-to-Army Staff Talks (AAST) between India and South Africa. Both sides explored ways to enhance bilateral defense cooperation through training exchanges and joint capability development. This is a significant step toward strengthening relations between our armed forces.”
The South African delegation also visited the Indian Army’s initiatives related to artificial intelligence and the 505 Army Base Workshop. This visit provided insights into technology-driven changes and indigenous defense capabilities.
These talks occurred shortly after a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa during the 18th BRICS Summit. They discussed bilateral relations and global issues of mutual interest.
Last week, Modi and Ramaphosa reviewed progress in various areas of cooperation and exchanged views on the multifaceted strategic partnership between India and South Africa.
The Ministry of External Affairs later issued a statement regarding the meeting. During their discussions, Modi emphasized that both nations would collaborate for Africa’s progress, prioritize Global South interests, and work towards a more balanced global order.
In a post on X, Modi expressed, “I was pleased to meet President Cyril Ramaphosa during the BRICS Summit in Delhi. We reviewed all aspects of the India-South Africa strategic partnership, including the India-SACU trade agreement, mining and critical minerals, infrastructure, food security, DPI, emerging technologies, and skill development. Our partnership is rooted in history and firmly focused on the future. Together, we will work for Africa’s progress, the priorities of the Global South, and a more balanced global order.”
