Jaipur, August 13: In a shocking incident, an inmate was shot dead while being transported to jail in Jaipur. Opposition leader Tikaram Julie raised serious concerns about the safety of prisoners in police custody and the overall law and order situation in the state.
The 45-year-old inmate, identified as Gangasahay Kumawat, was shot dead on Wednesday evening while returning to jail from his home. The incident occurred in the Janaki Vihar area of the Dhabas locality, under the jurisdiction of the Karni Vihar police station.
Gangasahay was riding a motorcycle when two masked assailants approached him and opened fire. Reports indicate that the attackers fired three rounds, one of which struck Gangasahay in the head, resulting in his immediate death.
According to Prashant Kiran, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Jaipur West, the assailants fled the scene after the shooting. Local police from Karni Vihar, Bhankrota, and Chitrakoot arrived promptly after receiving information about the incident.
Following the shooting, a large crowd gathered at the scene. Police collected evidence and initiated an investigation into the matter. Authorities revealed that Gangasahay was serving a sentence for a murder case dating back to 2018. He had been convicted in the murder of Mahendra Gurjar, a history-sheeter from the Moti Dungri area, and was held at the Sanganeer Open Jail.
Reports suggest that Gangasahay had visited his home in Dhabas and was returning to the open jail when he was attacked.
In response to the incident, opposition leader Tikaram Julie criticized the state government and questioned the law and order situation in Jaipur. He stated that the city has become a “capital living under the shadow of fear and terror.” The brazen attack by two masked assailants in broad daylight clearly indicates that the fear of the law has dissipated, leaving the safety of ordinary citizens in jeopardy.
Julie further questioned, without naming Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma, “How long will Rajasthan continue to live in an atmosphere of fear?”
On April 25, 2018, Dharmendra Gurjar, a resident of Shastri Nagar, filed a complaint stating that his elder brother, Mahendra Gurjar, had been attacked during a dispute with Gangasahay, leading to Mahendra’s death.
Gangasahay was later convicted in this case and was serving his sentence at Sanganeer Open Jail.
