New Delhi, August 27: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for thunderstorms and heavy rain across significant regions of Madhya Pradesh. The weather center in Bhopal has highlighted the risk of lightning and severe weather conditions.
Meteorologists indicate that the alert level is particularly high in the western and northern districts, while the central and eastern areas are being monitored with a lower warning status.
The IMD forecasts heavy to very heavy rainfall, which may lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and temporary flooding. There is also a risk of disruptions to road and rail traffic due to water accumulation and reduced visibility, as well as the potential for strong winds to uproot weak trees or damage temporary structures. Fields may experience temporary water accumulation, and local power supply interruptions are possible.
According to the advisory, areas such as Shyopur Kala, Morena, Gwalior, Bhind, Datia/Ratangarh, Shivpuri, Guna, Ashoknagar, Tikamgarh, Niwadi/Orchha, and Mandsaur/Gandhi Sagar Sanctuary are likely to experience moderate thunderstorms and rain with lightning. Rainfall rates in these regions could reach 5-15 mm per hour, and the probability of lightning striking the ground is estimated at 30-60 percent.
In districts like Neemuch, Ratlam, Dholawad, Agar-Malwa, Rajgarh, Vidisha, Udaygiri, Damoh, Panna, Rewa, Satna, Chitrakoot, Chhatarpur, Khajuraho, Bhopal, Sehore, Raisen, Narmadapuram, Betul, Shajapur, Ujjain, Balaghat, Seoni, Jabalpur, Narsinghpur, Chhindwara, Mandla, Dindori, Katni, Umaria, Anuppur, Sagar, Sidhi, Shahdol, and Singrauli, light thunderstorms with lightning and light rain are possible. Rainfall in these areas is expected to remain below 5 m/s, with a lightning probability of less than 30 percent.
The IMD has warned about the potential impacts of heavy rainfall, including water accumulation in low-lying areas, temporary disruptions to road and rail traffic due to reduced visibility, and local flooding risks. Strong winds associated with thunderstorms may uproot weak trees and damage thatched or temporary structures. Fields may also see temporary water accumulation.
Residents are advised to exercise caution, stay away from rivers, canals, and low-lying areas, avoid standing under trees or power poles during storms, and secure their electrical and electronic devices. Farmers are urged to protect harvested crops and livestock. Drivers should exercise caution on wet roads and avoid unnecessary travel in affected areas.
