High-Level Meeting on Safety of Migrant Odias Amidst Middle East Turmoil

Bhubaneswar, March 3: In light of the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and West Asia, a high-level meeting was convened to assess the safety and situation of migrant Odias residing in the region. The meeting, chaired by Chief Secretary Anu Garg, was called under the directives of Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Chandra Majhi to ensure preparedness and initiate necessary measures. The Chief Secretary advised all relevant officials to closely monitor the situation and remain ready to take appropriate actions as needed.

It is noteworthy that the Ministry of External Affairs has issued a 24/7 toll-free helpline number (800-46342) and a WhatsApp number (+971 543090571) to assist Indian citizens in the affected areas. In this context, the Odisha government has formed a task force in coordination with the Odisha Family Directorate, Home Department, State Labour Directorate, and the Migrant Protector Office (POE) under the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. The situation is being closely monitored.

The Odisha Family Directorate has been designated as the single point of contact for coordinating with the Odia migrant community, alongside the Department of Odia Language, Literature, and Culture.

During the meeting, Police Director General Y.B. Khurania reported that the situation is being closely watched and necessary steps are being taken. All relevant officials have been alerted. He further stated that the situation is under control, with strict monitoring of social media posts and prompt action being taken wherever necessary.

Among those present at the meeting were Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department Hemant Sharma, Intelligence Director R.P. Koche, Director of Odisha Trade Family, and Secretary of OLL & C Department Dr. Vijay Ketan Upadhyay, along with Labour Commissioner Indramani Tripathi.
