New Delhi, March 10: Southern Brave has appointed Hemang Badani as the head coach of its men’s team ahead of the upcoming season of ‘The Hundred’. Ian Bell will serve as his assistant coach.
This decision comes just a month after Ian Bell joined the Delhi Capitals as Badani’s deputy in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The owners of Delhi Capitals, GMR, acquired a 49% stake in Southern Brave last July.
Southern Brave became the champions of the men’s ‘The Hundred’ in 2021 and finished as runners-up in 2024. However, the team’s performance last year was disappointing, as they lost half of their matches and failed to qualify for the knockout rounds.
Hemang Badani captained Delhi Capitals last season, where the team had a strong start but ultimately missed out on the playoffs. He has significant coaching experience in franchise cricket and has held coaching roles in other GMR-owned teams, including the Seattle Orcas in MLC and Dubai Capitals in ILT20. Badani has played 4 Test matches and 40 ODIs for India.
On the other hand, Ian Bell brings valuable local knowledge and experience. He has previously worked with England’s Under-19 and Lions teams. In 2024, he served as the batting coach for the Sri Lankan Test team during England’s tour. Bell also worked with the New Zealand men’s team before the 2023 ODI World Cup and has been an assistant coach for Birmingham Phoenix in ‘The Hundred’. He has played 118 Tests, 161 ODIs, and 8 T20 matches for England.
