Chennai, August 13: The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has issued a warning for heavy rainfall in Tamil Nadu until August 17. The forecast also includes the possibility of thunderstorms and strong winds in several districts.
Currently, heavy rainfall is being experienced in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu due to a weak low-level atmospheric circulation. This weather system is expected to create favorable conditions for rain across various parts of the state in the coming days.
According to the weather forecast, light to moderate rain is likely in some areas of the Western Ghats on Thursday. Thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds may also occur in certain regions. Residents are advised to stay indoors.
People are urged to remain vigilant and avoid seeking shelter under trees or near open buildings.
On August 14, rainfall activity is expected to spread to more districts. Moderate rain may occur in places within the Western Ghats, as well as in Madurai, Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kanchipuram, Ranipet, Viluppuram, Shivaganga, and Ramanathapuram districts.
The weather forecast indicates that rainfall across the state will not be continuous or uniform. Instead, sporadic and localized rain is expected, with conditions varying from one district to another. Some areas may remain dry while nearby regions experience thunderstorms.
In Chennai, a change in weather is anticipated on Thursday. Light rain, accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning, may occur in some parts of the city during the evening or night. As the day progresses, clouds may gather, and rain could begin in certain areas.
Travelers in the evening are advised to exercise caution, as sudden rainfall may reduce visibility and cause water accumulation on low-lying roads. Drivers should be careful during thunderstorms and strong winds.
The ongoing rainfall is expected to provide some relief from the humid weather in many areas. However, the risk of lightning and strong winds remains, particularly in hilly and open coastal regions.
The Regional Meteorological Centre will continue to monitor the atmospheric circulation and will issue district-level updates if the system intensifies.
