Investigation Expands into Allegations of Conversion and Harassment at KGMU

KGMU faces scrutiny as STF report reveals serious allegations against faculty and staff regarding harassment and religious conversion.

Lucknow, October 31 (Daily Kiran) : The investigation into allegations of religious conversion and harassment involving female doctors at King George’s Medical University (KGMU) in Lucknow is intensifying. Following a report from the Special Task Force (STF), numerous professors, doctors, and staff members are now under scrutiny.

The STF’s findings raise serious concerns about the conduct of several faculty members, with some professors identified as complicit in the alleged misconduct. The report accuses individuals of pressuring female doctors to convert, blackmailing them, and attempting to silence complaints against the accused.

In light of these conclusions, the state government has directed university administration to initiate action against those identified in the report. KGMU’s executive council is set to form a six-member investigative committee to delve into the matter. This committee will include a vice-chancellor, a registrar, a faculty member from the Scheduled Caste category, a faculty member from the Other Backward Classes category, and two additional members appointed by the executive council.

Reports indicate that the STF’s investigation uncovered involvement from various departments within the university. Specific allegations detail misconduct in the pathology, radiology, and microbiology departments, as well as complaints linked to Gandhi Ward.

The report questions the roles of senior faculty members, including Professor Suresh Babu and Additional Professor Dr. Sumaira Kayyum from the pathology department. They are accused of suppressing complaints made by affected doctors, offering support to the accused, and mentally harassing the complainants instead of ensuring appropriate action.

The investigation is based on two FIRs filed at different police stations in Lucknow. The first was lodged on December 23, 2025, against Dr. Rameez Malik at the Chowk police station by resident doctor Dr. Dewarti Mitra. The second FIR was filed on December 29, 2025, against resident doctor Mohammad Adil at the Kaiserbagh police station, based on a complaint from nursing staff member Maviya.

KGMU spokesperson K.K. Singh stated that the university has taken action regarding these cases and has also uncovered additional incidents. He noted, “Two cases have emerged. One involved Rameez, while the other concerned a nursing staff member and an impersonator. There was a slight delay in addressing Rameez’s case initially, but we independently identified the other two cases and took action based on our findings.”

The STF report also includes allegations against Dr. Sajeev, who is accused of forming romantic relationships with multiple female doctors and subsequently pressuring them to convert. Other doctors mentioned in relation to these allegations include Dr. Mansi Saxena, Dr. Kritika Pandey, and Dr. Muskaan. Dr. Sajeev was arrested on January 9 of this year.

Another notable case involves Jyoti Rao, a contractual employee in KGMU’s microbiology department. She filed a complaint against a colleague, Shafaat Ali Khan, alleging harassment, stalking, and pressure to convert. Despite her complaint, no action was taken against Khan, and instead, Rao’s contract was terminated.

The investigation also implicates resident doctor Rizwan from the radiology department, who is accused of blackmailing female doctors and coercing them into conversion.

The STF report claims that when the victims attempted to file complaints, they were threatened with severe repercussions, including failing exams and ruining their careers. Allegations involving nursing staff at Gandhi Ward are also detailed, with a staff member named Nafis accused of coercing Jyoti Singh into conversion and marriage.

Additionally, another employee, Furqan, is accused of pressuring Jagriti Gupta to adopt a different religion and marry. These allegations form part of a broader investigation into the activities of certain university staff members.

The STF report questions the conduct of several other university officials and faculty members, including the personal secretary to the vice-chancellor, S.S. Abbas, former department head Dr. Abbas Ali Mehdi, Professor Usman Kauser, and other faculty members from the biochemistry department. They are accused of shielding some doctors and staff facing allegations and influencing decisions related to departmental matters.

The investigation into the university’s handling of complaints has also brought these individuals under scrutiny. The STF’s report mentions a group called “Islamic Medicos,” claiming that a network of former and current medical students linked to SMSCI Agra and KGMU is active.

The report includes names of several doctors and details of their communications related to the case. The STF has recommended departmental investigations against associates and staff linked to Dr. Sajeev, referencing a Vishakha committee investigation that found Dr. Sajeev guilty of related allegations.

Based on the STF’s findings, the state government has formally instructed the university to take action against those identified in the report.

On October 30, Joint Secretary Anand Kumar Tripathi directed the KGMU registrar to proceed with the necessary actions.
