Heavy Rain Alert in Himachal Pradesh Until July 22: Landslide and Flood Risks Loom

Shimla, July 18: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heavy to extremely heavy rainfall alert for Himachal Pradesh over the next five days. According to the department, torrential rain is expected in several districts from July 18 to July 22. Residents are advised to remain vigilant, avoid unnecessary travel, and adhere to guidelines issued by local authorities.

The weather forecast indicates that on July 18, heavy rain may occur in parts of Chamba, Kangra, and Mandi districts, while Kullu is expected to experience moderate to heavy rainfall. The weather will become more active on July 19, with heavy to very heavy rain predicted in Kangra, Shimla, and Mandi. Additionally, heavy rain is forecasted for Chamba, Kullu, Hamirpur, and Sirmaur, while moderate to heavy rain is expected in Una, Bilaspur, and Solan.

The situation may worsen on July 20-21, with the IMD warning of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in Chamba, Kangra, Mandi, and Sirmaur. Other districts, including Kullu, Shimla, Hamirpur, Bilaspur, and Una, are also likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall. Tribal areas like Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti are expected to see moderate to heavy rain as well. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to continue in Kangra, Mandi, Sirmaur, and Shimla on July 22.

The IMD has cautioned that continuous rainfall could lead to landslides, mudslides, flash floods, waterlogging, and ground subsidence in vulnerable areas. Water levels in rivers, streams, and other water sources may rise rapidly, increasing the risk to surrounding regions. Weak buildings and structures could sustain damage, and horticulture and standing crops may be adversely affected. The likelihood of road accidents and traffic jams may also rise due to slippery roads and reduced visibility.

Residents are advised to avoid areas prone to landslides and flash floods. It is essential to maintain a safe distance from rivers, streams, and other water bodies, and to postpone trekking and outdoor activities for the time being. Drivers should adhere to speed limits and follow traffic advisories issued by authorities. Citizens are urged to stay updated on weather warnings and to follow local administration instructions during emergencies.
