Chennai, July 16: A severe heatwave continues to grip Tamil Nadu. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an alert on Thursday for 19 districts in the state. The warning indicates that intense sunlight, rising temperatures, and high humidity could lead to health issues related to heat.
According to the IMD, districts such as Madurai, Tirupattur, Vellore, Ranipet, Kallakurichi, Tiruvannamalai, Kanchipuram, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Namakkal, Karur, Erode, Tiruchirappalli (Trichy), Ariyalur, Perambalur, Sivaganga, Virudhunagar, and Dindigul are likely to experience heatwave conditions on Thursday.
The weather department has advised residents in these areas to avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight during the afternoon, stay hydrated, and take all necessary precautions against the heat.
The IMD also forecasted that on Friday, districts like Virudhunagar, Sivaganga, Madurai, Dindigul, Karur, Namakkal, and Erode may continue to experience heatwave conditions.
However, there is a glimmer of hope for relief. A slight change in the wind patterns may bring light rain to the districts connected to the Western Ghats by Saturday. Meanwhile, moderate rainfall is expected in one or two places along Tamil Nadu’s northern coastal areas on Friday, with light rain possible in several other regions of the state.
Despite this, the IMD warned that until July 17, coastal districts in Tamil Nadu will face high temperatures and increased humidity, resulting in discomfort for residents.
In Chennai, the maximum temperature is projected to be around 39 degrees Celsius on Thursday. The combination of heat and humidity is likely to make daytime conditions quite uncomfortable.
Authorities have particularly advised children, the elderly, and those with pre-existing health conditions to avoid going outside during the afternoon, stay well-hydrated, and keep their bodies cool.
