Gandhinagar, May 13: Gyaneshwari Yadav made India proud on the third day of the 2026 Asian Weightlifting Championship. Competing in the women’s 53-kilogram category, she secured a silver medal in the snatch and a bronze in the overall total.
The championship, ongoing since May 11 at the Mahatma Mandir and Exhibition Center, features 178 athletes from 28 Asian countries and two Commonwealth nations. This event also serves as a qualification pathway for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, intensifying competition across all categories.
In the fiercely contested women’s 53-kilogram category, China’s Jinlan Zhao lifted a total of 216 kilograms to clinch the gold medal. Vietnam’s Hoai Huong Nguyen secured the silver by lifting 195 kilograms, while India’s Gyaneshwari Yadav earned the bronze with a total lift of 194 kilograms.
Gyaneshwari excelled in the snatch, lifting 88 kilograms to win the silver medal in that segment, finishing just behind Zhao, who lifted 95 kilograms. In the clean and jerk, Zhao maintained her dominance with a lift of 121 kilograms, while Nguyen secured the silver with 108 kilograms.
Ashwani Kumar, CEO of the Indian Weightlifting Federation, remarked that these results reflect both the determination and progress of athletes at the national level. He stated, “Gyaneshwari’s performance is a strong indication of India’s rising competitiveness on the Asian stage. The narrow margins of victory and defeat at this level show that we are rapidly closing the gap with the continent’s best athletes.”
The federation congratulated Yadav and the entire Indian team, stating that this achievement will serve as motivation for the remaining events of the championship. With several weight categories yet to be decided, high-level performances are expected to continue throughout the competition.
