Gunfire Near the White House Leads to Temporary Lockdown

Washington, May 5: A lockdown was briefly imposed near the White House following the shooting of an armed individual. According to officials, the incident occurred when the suspect fired at security personnel.

Deputy Director Matt Quinn informed reporters that the event took place around 3:30 PM. Plainclothes Secret Service agents spotted a suspicious individual, suspected of carrying a weapon, while patrolling the outer area of the White House. Police were called to the scene shortly after.

When officers attempted to approach the suspect, he fled a short distance before suddenly drawing a gun and firing at the security personnel. In response, the agents returned fire, injuring the suspect. He was transported to a hospital, but no information about his condition has been released.

A minor bystander was also injured in the shooting. Authorities reported that the child did not sustain serious injuries and is receiving treatment. Initial reports indicate that the child was struck by a bullet from the suspect.

The incident occurred near 15th Street and Independence Avenue, not far from the White House. Security personnel had been monitoring the suspect for some time due to indications that he was armed.

Following the incident, journalists present on the North Lawn of the White House were instructed to move indoors. The lockdown was lifted within minutes, and President Donald Trump proceeded to attend a scheduled small business event in the East Room. While he did not directly address the incident, he remarked on the security of the capital, stating that Washington D.C. is now one of the safest cities in America.

Officials have indicated that there is currently no evidence suggesting that the suspect targeted the President or the White House. The investigation is ongoing. Vice President J.D. Vance’s motorcade had passed through the area shortly before the incident, but there is no evidence of a planned attack.

A weapon was recovered from the scene, and the Metropolitan Police Department will now handle the investigation. This incident comes amid heightened security concerns in Washington. In April, during the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, an armed individual breached security and injured a guard.
